Capstone Project
The Emigrant Factory
A Kafkaesque interpretation of cross-border flow

By: TSOI Ka Ming, Kevin | Tutor: Gilles Vanderstocken
THE EMIGRANT FACTORY is happening in a city where mass emigration has caused extensive shortage of labour. In that context, a new border policy is proposed: All foreign visas can only be applied at the border. The project explores the existing steps and procedure for emigrants and immigrants along with the various related flows: human, information, material. This process is then translated into various chapters “inserted” within the Hong Kong International Airport. These moments invade and transform the Airport, turning it into the Emigrant Factory. The resulting machine/space interweaves two flows on various levels: instantly processed outbound visa applications and entrance ones. Ultimately, the design aims at critically exaggerating the complexity of the system at stake at the existing border facilities. The border is no longer an imaginary line or a simple counter but is reimagined as a complex spatial system.
